THRIFT stores have become increasingly popular among the younger generation, but sustainable shopping goes beyond discounted prices. Charity shops are retail establishments that aim to generate income for the less fortunate by selling pre-loved clothes, household items, and books. By shopping at a charity shop, you not only make a purchase but also give back to the community. Here is a list of charity shops in the Klang Valley that you can visit on your next shopping trip.

    1. Bargain Basement: Started by IOI Foundation executive director Datin Joanne Wong, Bargain Basement accepts preloved, unused, or excess goods from the public and sells them at affordable prices. It offers a variety of second-hand items, including clothes, electronics, and furniture. All proceeds from sales, which have amounted to over RM528,000, are channeled to 33 charities nationwide. Locations include IOI Mall in Puchong, IOI City Mall in Putrajaya, and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) campuses in Sungai Long and Kampar.

    2. Kedai Bless: Kedai Bless, a project of SIBKL Community Bhd, is a well-known charity shop in Malaysia. It sells pre-loved items, mainly clothes and accessories, and its net profits benefit Myanmar refugee children, the Orang Asli community, and drug rehabilitation programs. The project also provides employment opportunities to single mothers, Orang Asli, refugees, and ex-drug rehabilitation center residents. Donations are accepted at four of their outlets, namely D’Aman Crimson, Sunway Mas Commercial Centre, Mid Valley Megamall, and Citta Mall.

    3. Charity Shoppe: Located in Bandar Baru Bangi, Charity Shoppe was started by Islamic Relief Malaysia in 2012. It offers a range of goods, including clothes, decorative items, appliances, books, and toys. In addition to raising funds, the shop serves as a community center and an information hub on humanitarian issues. It encourages community involvement and relies on volunteers. Details can be found at islamic-relief.org.my/charity-shoppe-2.

The stores offer a wide range of items such as toys, clothes, furniture, electrical items, and vintage goods. Kedai Jimat’s mission is to support residential homes, educational programs, monthly food parcel programs, and disaster relief efforts. Donations can be made at various locations across the country.

    5. Jumble Station: Jumble Station is a charity initiative under the Parents Without Partners program that raises funds for single parents. It sells used items like clothes, books, and household appliances. The funds raised are used to support single parents and sustain the organization’s operations. Outlets can be found in Subang Mewah and Jaya One mall, and donated goods are accepted at these locations.

    6. Sew X Dignity: Sew X Dignity is an online store that supports refugees and single mothers through training and entrepreneurship opportunities. The store offers handcrafted items such as pouches, tote bags, shirts, money packets, key fobs, coasters, and mini serving boards, all made by marginalized women who have undergone sewing workshops. All proceeds go towards supporting the Dignity for Children Foundation.

By supporting these charity shops, you not only get to enjoy thrifting but also make a meaningful contribution to the community.
