The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department is taking measures to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season at the end of the year. Director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail mentioned that the department has identified hotspots in seven districts, mainly in flood-prone areas such as Sepang, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, Port Klang, Shah Alam, Bestari Jaya, and Pulau Indah. To ensure preparedness, the department has 1,700 personnel and 92 boats ready for deployment. Additionally, they are considering freezing leave if necessary.
In terms of rainfall, this month is predicted to see states receiving between 100mm and 450mm of precipitation. October is expected to be the transition period to the next monsoon season, and all 38 fire stations in Selangor have been advised to make the necessary preparations. When questioned, Wan Md Razali highlighted the need for more personnel and fire engines in the state. Currently, there are approximately 200 vacant positions, and the existing fire engines are 12 to 13 years old.
Wan Md Razali shared that on the department’s best day this year, 61% of their 76 fire rescue tender vehicles were in operation. However, on average, at least 50% of the fleet is out of service for maintenance or repairs. From January to August, the department responded to 4,991 fires and 19,799 rescue calls in Selangor. Wan Md Razali emphasized that these high numbers underscore the urgency to increase manpower and assets in the state.
