According to Saipolyazan Yusop, the chief operating officer of Mentri Besar Incorporated (MBI), the halal industry in Selangor is projected to grow by 15% this year. He attributed this growth to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, which has boosted demand for halal products and services across various sectors. Saipolyazan added that Selangor is well-positioned to capitalize on this opportunity.

MBI, the state investment arm, is working through its subsidiary HIS Toyyiba Sdn Bhd to promote local offerings in the halal industry. They aim to assist local entrepreneurs in obtaining halal certification and registering their businesses. While the issuance of halal certificates falls under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), the state government is supporting the application process through the Selangor Islamic Religious Department, as mentioned by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari further highlighted that various programs have been conducted to enhance industry players’ awareness of the procedures involved in obtaining halal certification. These efforts were mentioned after he inaugurated the Selangor Pavilion at the 19th Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas 2023).

As of 2022, Selangor generated a value of RM55.7 million from different business-matching programs in the halal industry. This represented a 40% increase compared to the previous year, according to Amirudin. This year’s participation in the annual halal industry exhibition was the second time the state government joined through MBI. The event, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur for four days, featured 24 booths from state-owned companies and local enterprises.

The participating sectors included food and beverage, logistics and warehousing, cosmetic and beauty products, educational institutions, as well as media and publications.

Mihas 2023 also boasted 1,890 booths set up by both local and international businesses. Dr Fahmi Ngah, the Selangor Islamic Affairs and Innovation Committee Chairman, and Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, the HIS Toyyiba Chairman, were also present at the event.
