The state of Selangor is planning to construct 1,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by the end of 2023. This initiative aims to encourage the public to use electric vehicles.
Hee Loy Sian, the caretaker chairman of the state’s tourism, environment, green technology, and Orang Asli affairs committee, stated that the state will collaborate with private companies for this project rather than allocating funds. Similar to car parking services, these companies will be responsible for investing in and managing the charging infrastructure.
Currently, Selangor has 102 EV charging units under local authorities, with the highest number, 29, being in MPSepang. Tesla will also contribute by constructing 10 stations, each equipped with multiple parking bays featuring EV chargers.
Discussions with the local authorities are ongoing, and workshops will be organized for all 12 local authorities in Selangor to discuss the implementation and process. A standardized pricing system through a single application will be used to ensure consistency and avoid cost variations.
The state is actively promoting the use of EVs to reduce carbon emissions. According to Hee, vehicles are the largest contributors to carbon emissions, and their goal is to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030. The long-term goal is to achieve zero emissions by 2050.
