Fifteen roadside traders in Selayang, Selangor, received an unpleasant surprise when their business items, which they had left by the curb after operating hours, were confiscated. Tables, chairs, and portable kiosks were taken away by enforcement officers from Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) during a raid on September 13. The operation took place in Medan Puteri, Prima Gombak, and Taman Perindustrian Bolton. In addition, action was taken against a restaurant operator in Selayang Jaya for placing tables and chairs outside the premises. The tables, chairs, and tents belonging to the operator were confiscated under the Street, Drainage, and Building Act 1974 and Hawker By-laws (MPS) 2007.
The raid was conducted as part of intensified enforcement efforts by MPS to ensure that traders and business operators adhere to regulations. MPS president Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi stated that a special unit called the Business Premises Enforcement Taskforce has been established to address long-standing issues. “Illegally run businesses keep emerging, and these are not limited to roadside traders,” he explained. “We even took action against a chicken abattoir operator for operating without a license. The task force will also verify if these businesses are legitimate and if they are selling products other than what is specified in their license,” he informed StarMetro.
Following public complaints, a chicken processing plant located in Jalan Sungai Bakau in Rawang was sealed, and the operator was issued a compound of RM12,500. Since August 25, the task force has inspected 700 premises, with nine premises being ordered to cease operations. A total of 67 compounds were issued.
