A delegation from the Special Select Committee on Infrastructure, Transport and Communication visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Underground Discharge Channel on Thursday (Sept 28).

Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, the Ayer Hitam MP and member of the delegation, stated that the channel is one of the largest in the world and spans 6.3km with a depth of 50m underground. It serves the purpose of receiving overflow from various small to mid-size rivers.

According to Dr Wee, the construction of the channel began in 1993 and was fully completed in June 2006. Its main function is to redirect water from the Oootoshifurutone River into the Edogawa River. He shared this information in a Facebook post on Thursday.

Dr Wee mentioned that the delegation learned about the channel’s construction, which aimed to address frequent flooding in the Tokyo metropolitan area. This region is known for heavy rainfall and typhoons.

In his post, Dr Wee highlighted that since its establishment, the tunnel has been utilized 143 times, with an average frequency of seven times per year. Its success lies in its ability to prevent floods in the fully developed lower basin.

The structure of the channel’s chambers also impressed Dr Wee. The chambers feature striking columns and walkways, showcasing architectural brilliance.

Dr Wee also mentioned that the delegation was led by Yusuf Abd Wahab, the Tanjong Manis MP. Other members included V. Ganabatirau MP from Klang, Zahir Hassan MP from Wangsa Maju, Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan MP from Tasek Gelugor, Datuk Matbali Musah MP from Sipitang, and Khairil Nizam Khirudin MP from Jerantut.
