PUTRAJAYA: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has given permission for the temporary use of price stickers on imported white rice (BPI) sacks until Nov 30. This authorization will last until the sacks with new pricing arrive, as stated in a press release on Sunday (Sept 24). The decision was made after a meeting between the ministry and rice industry players on Sept 13, following a price adjustment by Padiberas Nasional Berhad on Sept 1.
According to the ministry, all Rice Wholesale and Rice Retail license holders, including hypermarket operators, were informed about the decision through a circular issued by the Padi and Rice Regulatory Authority director-general on Sept 13. The decision to temporarily use price stickers was made collectively, taking into account the time and cost required by rice wholesalers to replace the old sacks with the new ones.
The ministry has also advised all Rice Wholesale and Rice Retail license holders to comply with the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 (Act 522) and its regulations.
Recently, a video went viral showing traders applying new price stickers to the rice sacks, allegedly in an attempt to make a profit, as reported by Bernama.
