A man, aged 30, was arrested on Wednesday (July 19) by Semporna police for burglary cases in the district. The arrest was made at 11pm at Dataran Lepa based on a tip-off. Semporna police believe they have solved at least eight house break-ins in the district with the suspect’s arrest, according to OCPD Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah on Friday (July 21).
During the arrest, a motorcycle with a fake number plate, a blade, scissors, a sling bag, leather wallets, identity cards, ATM bank cards, mobile phones, receipts from pawn shops, and a watch were seized. The suspect’s arrest was made following a report on Tuesday (July 18) by a 66-year-old man whose house at Kampung Bubul was broken into. The victim reported the loss of a mobile phone, a gold ring, personal documents, and cash, totaling RM2,000.
Further inspection at the suspect’s house in Kampung Bubul resulted in the discovery of two fanny packs, two tablet computers, and two mobile phones. On Thursday (July 20), the suspect led the police to several pawn shops in the district where a stolen gold ring and watch were recovered. The suspect also tested positive for drugs.
The case will be investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for house breaking to commit an offence, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 14 years and a fine or whipping for subsequent offences. Additionally, investigation will be conducted under section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for carrying offensive weapons in public, which entails a jail term of 5 to 10 years. The suspect will also be investigated under the National Registration Regulations and the Dangerous Drugs Act, he added.
