An elderly man in Kota Bharu was placed under remand for two days by the Tumpat Magistrate’s Court due to suspicions of attempting to smuggle petrol and diesel into Thailand through an illegal depot nearby. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry state director Azman Ismail reported that Wan Ashrul Afham Mohamad Azmi, aged 61, was remanded on Sunday to aid in an investigation under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
The individual was apprehended by the 9th Battalion of the General Operations Force during a mission known as Op Taring Wawasan on Saturday. “Several drums containing petrol and diesel, amounting to approximately 1,950 litres, were seized,” Azman stated.
If convicted, the suspect could potentially face a fine of up to RM1mil or three years in prison, or both, as well as a fine of RM2 million for corporations under the Act. Azman issued a firm warning, stressing that there will be no leniency in taking action against individuals involved in such illicit activities.- Bernama
