GEORGE TOWN: A woman in her 60s sustained a head wound when she fell during an incident involving a monkey attack at Youth Park in George Town. The incident occurred during an aerobics session at 7 am on Saturday, November 4. The Penang Island City Council confirmed the event.
The authorities suspect that the monkey was attracted to the woman’s bag, which contained food and drinks. When the monkey approached, the woman became startled and attempted to retreat. Unfortunately, she ended up falling and hitting her head on a road divider, resulting in the injury.
Medical personnel at the scene provided first aid assistance to the victim before transporting her to Hospital Penang for further treatment. It has been reported that the head wound required nine stitches for closure.
Monkey attacks have been relatively common in Youth Park, with incidents occurring from time to time. Local authorities have stated that they are implementing measures to manage the issue and minimize the risk to park-goers.
Visitors to the park are advised to be cautious and avoid carrying food or items that could potentially attract monkeys. In case of an encounter with a monkey, experts advise remaining calm and slowly backing away to minimize the chances of provoking an attack.
The incident serves as a reminder for the public to be aware of the presence of monkeys in urban areas and to take necessary precautions when visiting spaces inhabited by these creatures.
Furthermore, those who witness monkey-related incidents are urged to immediately inform park authorities or relevant authorities for prompt action.
Apart from this incident, Youth Park remains a popular spot for residents to engage in recreational activities, such as jogging, cycling, and other forms of exercise. The park is frequented by people of all age groups, including senior citizens seeking to maintain an active lifestyle.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are working on strategies to minimize human-monkey conflicts in the area.
