Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Immigration Department, and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry conducted an operation on Sunday (Oct 15) which resulted in the detention of seven illegal immigrants. The Immigration Department personnel arrested the individuals for lacking valid travel documents. MBPP took to Facebook to inform that the operation targeted business activities carried out by foreign nationals at a night market in the south-west district of Penang island. During the operation, MBPP’s Small Business Unit inspected 123 hawkers at the night market. They also confiscated items from four stalls selling fruits and carpets that were operated by foreign traders. A total of 12 compound notices were issued to food traders who did not possess anti-typhoid injection.
The MBPP licensing officers gave warnings and advice to food and beverage vendors regarding environmental cleanliness and business equipment to ensure the quality of food and beverage preparation. The State Domestic Trade and Cost of Living personnel examined the stalls at the night market and offered warnings and notices to traders regarding the detailed and refined price labeling on their products to avoid causing confusion for customers.
In addition to this, MBPP inspected five business premises. They issued one notice to a premises owner who operated without a license and another notice along with three compounds for obstructing roads by placing their equipment and products on the roadside. MBPP stated that they will continue such operations in the future, with the involvement of more enforcement agencies.
