Seven men have been arrested by the police in George Town following a riot that took place between supporters of the Penang and Kedah football teams outside the City Stadium. The incident occurred after Kedah defeated Penang 2-1 on Tuesday, August 22. According to George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong, two of the suspects sustained injuries to their heads during the altercation, believed to be caused by rocks being thrown. The glass door of a bus was also smashed during the riot, which happened around 11:20 pm on Tuesday.
Assistant Comm Soffian Santong stated that the rioting took place at a petrol station and involved two groups of men who are believed to be supporters of the two local soccer clubs. The conflict began with provocations between the two groups outside the stadium after they watched the Malaysia Super League (MSL) match between Penang and Kedah. Seven suspects, aged between 18 and 38 and from Penang, Kedah, and Sarawak, were subsequently arrested. The police also confiscated two rocks, two traffic cones, and a stick believed to have been used by the suspects during the incident. The glass door of a bus carrying Kedah team supporters was smashed by one of the suspects, while two other suspects sustained head injuries from thrown rocks.
The case is currently under investigation under Section 148 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for rioting and vandalism. All suspects have been remanded for two days to aid in the investigation.
