KOTA KINABALU: There is no outbreak of food poisoning in Semporna, amid reports of several cases at a resort in Kapalai recently, says Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

The Semporna MP said several food poisoning cases were reported to have occurred at that resort, but immediate action was taken to address the matter.

“Compound notices were issued to the resort operator and health officials were also quick to resolve the issues at hand. There is no outbreak of any sort,” he said yesterday.

He said instructions were given to ensure authorities take the matter seriously and to remain alert to prevent similar incidents.

“Enforcement will be more strict to make sure that cleanliness and hygiene are prioritised,” he said.

Shafie’s statement was issued after Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing ordered immediate action be taken following food poisoning cases owing to poor hygiene in Semporna.

Tiong said this had resulted in some tourists suffering diarrhea while others had to be admitted to hospital.

He said he had received complaints from travelers about Semporna’s poor state of cleanliness, food poisoning, pest infestation, and poor hospitality.

Tiong had warned that a red notice would be issued if the situation persists.
