A sheltered walkway has been constructed at SK Seri Perling 2 in Johor Baru to provide comfort for its 1,300 pupils.

The school’s assistant principal (administration), Maslinda Sulaiman, stated that before the construction of the walkway, there was no shade to protect pupils as they waited for school buses or when they arrived for classes.

With the number of pupils growing, the need for better facilities to ensure their comfort also increased.

Since the school has about 1,300 pupils studying in two sessions each day, they have to open two rear gates, C and D, in addition to the main entrance and exit points at the front.

However, there was no shelter at these gates to protect pupils from the sun or rain, Sulaiman explained.

The covered walkway, along with sheltered waiting areas, was constructed with the assistance of Eco World Foundation and Eco Botanic.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Eco World Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye announced that construction was completed in August.

He mentioned that SK Seri Perling 2 was one of the schools chosen as a beneficiary of the foundation’s special projects for schools, which are part of their student aid programme (SAP).

The aim of the foundation’s special projects is to improve basic facilities in schools, bringing a positive impact to the learning environment.

In May, 130 schools throughout the country participating in SAP had the opportunity to apply for special assistance.

Out of the 43 applications received, only 10 schools were shortlisted, and ultimately, due to limited resources, only three schools were chosen, with SK Seri Perling 2 being one of them.

Lee expressed his hope that the pupils will make good use of the new walkway.

He also stated that fulfilling the basic educational needs of children from less privileged families is the main focus of the foundation’s student aid programme, which has already provided furniture worth RM860,000 for classrooms and canteens.

Furthermore, Lee encouraged the pupils to have good attendance in school, emphasizing that education is crucial for improving their lives.
