The state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) in Ipoh conducted a raid on a business premises in Batu Gajah for allegedly imposing conditions on the sale of sugar, according to its director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail.
Kamalludin stated that enforcement officers disguised as buyers in order to enter the premises and purchase coarse sugar at a price of RM2.85 per pack. However, customers were required to first buy 1 kg of premium clear white sugar at a price of RM4.50 per package in order to be able to purchase the coarse sugar.
The Control of Supplies Act 1961 was violated by the trader, as the imposition of conditions was done without the authorization of the control of supply, as discovered during the undercover operation. Written notices explaining the purchase conditions were found on boxes and shelves by the officers.
A total of 100 kg of coarse sugar and 74 kg of refined white sugar, with a combined value of RM620.85, were confiscated for further investigation.
