A hardware shop located in Jalan Mantis, Upper Lanang in Sibu experienced significant damage after a fire broke out on Friday (Sept 8).
Sibu Bomba chief, Andy Alie, informed reporters at the scene that the fire spread rapidly due to several containers of paint stored in the shop.
“At 10.49am, we received an emergency call and immediately dispatched firefighters from the Sungai Merah and Central stations,” he said.
“Upon arrival, the fire was already at its peak,” he added.
Andy highlighted that their firefighting efforts were hindered by insufficient water pressure.
“We quickly contacted the Sibu Water Board to request an increase in water pressure,” he commented.
“However, our team could only spray water on the building from the outside as they were unable to enter due to the intense flames,” he further stated, mentioning that the fire was successfully controlled around midday.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are currently under investigation,” according to Andy.
Videos depicting the fire, accompanied by large volumes of black smoke emanating from the building, circulated rapidly on social media platforms.
