SIBU: A man was fined RM34,600 by the Sessions Court here on Friday (Aug 2) for illegally possessing protected wildlife and plant species parts.

Liwan Ting Ngee Kee Abdullah, 46, pleaded guilty to four counts of illegal possession of the items under four sections of the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.

According to the charge sheets, the items included two crocodile skulls, two wildcat skulls, one set of shark jaws, one macaque skull, nine porcupine quills, a panther skull, panther skin, a hornbill head, a dolphin skull, 30 boar tusks, four boar skulls, eight deer antlers and 31 pieces of agarwood.

The offences were committed at about 2pm on Aug 31, 2022 at a house in Jalan Sungai Antu here.

The facts of the case stated that a team from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and the police raided the residence while acting on a tip-off.

They found the accused with several items including animal skin and antlers displayed on the walls.

Other animal parts and the agarwood were found in boxes in two cupboards in separate rooms.

When questioned, the accused reportedly could not produce any permit for the items.

The Aquilaria malaccensis tree, from which agarwood is obtained, is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) critically endangered list.
