Traders at the Central Market in Sibu, numbering around 1,100, are eagerly anticipating a visit from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. The King and Queen, accompanied by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, are scheduled to arrive at the market on Tuesday (Sept 12) at around 8.30am. They will travel from RH Hotel to the market via a golf cart. During their visit, they will have breakfast at the market and then tour the Pasar Tamu section, which is said to be the largest in the country.
The Chairman of the Central Market Hawker Welfare Association, Tan Hong Kong, expressed the excitement of the traders regarding the royal visit. He stated, “We are all eagerly waiting for Their Majesties to visit us as this will be the first time that a King will set foot in our market. That is why we are very excited.” He further mentioned that a photo session with association members has been planned with the Royal Couple, but due to protocol, only around 20 to 30 members will be able to participate.
Tan also highlighted the significance of the photo session for the traders, as it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The traders have been advised to adhere to a “smart casual” dress code for the event. The visit of the King and Queen is part of their “Kembara Kenali Borneo” tour, where they aim to interact with Malaysians residing in Sabah and Sarawak. The tour, which began on September 3 and will conclude on September 13, covers a distance of 2,154km along the Pan Borneo Highway, connecting Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei.
