Singapore has agreed to establish a Consulate office in Kuching, as announced by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The establishment of the Consulate-General office was agreed upon during the 10th Malaysia-Singapore Annual Leaders’ Retreat held in Singapore. Premier Abang Johari mentioned that this new office will not only enhance bilateral relations but also contribute to the state’s economy with a particular focus on the tourism sector.
In addition to this development, Premier Abang Johari revealed that he discussed a proposal with Transport Minister Anthony Loke to consider allowing airline MASwings to operate flights to Singapore. This initiative aims to further strengthen the tourism industry in Sarawak, particularly by attracting visitors from Singapore.
During the 10th Malaysia-Singapore Annual Leaders’ Retreat, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong were in attendance. Furthermore, Premier Abang Johari also joined the delegation for a courtesy call on Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Overall, the establishment of the Consulate office in Kuching and the potential inclusion of MASwings flights to Singapore are expected to have positive impacts on both the bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia, as well as on the Sarawak tourism industry.
