Kota Tinggi: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has instructed the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) to create powerful water pumps to combat flooding issues.

Ahmad Zahid emphasized the importance of having locally-made pumps to remove stagnant flood waters without relying on imports.

“The water pumps that I approved during my visit to the flood-hit areas in Kota Tinggi, Segamat, and Batu Pahat last year have not been delivered yet.

“This is due to the procurement processes, so I have requested Sirim to develop its own powerful water pumps.

“Once the water pumps are ready, the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) can purchase them directly from Sirim,” he stated during a press conference after his visit to the temporary flood relief centre at SK Taman Kota Jaya on Tuesday (Jan 9).

Ahmad Zahid also mentioned that Sirim has already devised its own water filter system to provide fresh water to flood victims and areas with disrupted water supply.

He also witnessed the handover of three water filter units to the Civil Defence Force and has requested Nadma to acquire 20 units of the water filters for future use.
