Reports from Kota Baru reveal that there have been six cases of venomous stings by the Physaia physalis jellyfish among children aged one to 11 in Kelantan on Friday (March 1).

Kelantan Health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin mentioned that the incidents occurred in Bachok, with two cases in Pantai Melawi, and four cases recorded in Pantai Baru.

All affected individuals received initial treatment at the Bachok Health Clinic and were later transferred for further medical intervention at the Emergency and Trauma Department of Tengku Anis Hospital in Pasir Puteh, as well as the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian.

Symptoms experienced by those stung include pain, swelling, and itching at the site of the sting, as outlined by Dr. Zaini.

He reassured that all victims were discharged after a thorough medical evaluation determined their stable condition.

Dr. Zaini also highlighted the absence of an anti-venom for this particular jellyfish species, with treatment focused on symptom relief through painkillers.

As a precautionary measure, the Kelantan Health Department urges the public to remain vigilant about jellyfish presence in local waters.

Beachgoers in the area are advised against swimming in areas where jellyfish sightings have been confirmed and to avoid contact with the creatures until the situation is deemed safe and an official notification is issued.

“In case of a jellyfish sting, prompt medical attention should be sought at the nearest healthcare facility,” Dr. Zaini advised.

Recent reports indicate the presence of this jellyfish species in waters off Pahang and Terengganu, with a sting having the potential to be fatal. – Bernama
