A record number of six Malaysian universities have achieved rankings within the top 500 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. Universiti Malaya remains the highest-performing institution in Malaysia, moving up from the 351-400 band last year to the 251-300 band in the 2024 edition of the rankings. Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS is close behind, moving up from the 401-500 band to the 301-350 band. The other four universities in the top 500 are Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). UUM maintained its position in the 401-500 band, while the other institutions moved up from the 601-800 band.

THE chief global affairs officer Phil Baty praised the significant improvements made by Malaysian universities in the rankings, with almost every institution in the top 10 showing substantial progress. Baty also highlighted the efforts of Malaysian universities to attract international students and staff, which has contributed to their global reputation and is expected to lead to further improvements in future rankings. Malaysia is establishing itself as a major global education hub.

Out of the 23 Malaysian universities ranked, 12 experienced improvements in their rankings compared to last year, seven maintained their positions, and one newcomer entered the top 1,500 band. Among the universities that improved their rankings are Universiti Putra Malaysia (501-600), Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Sunway University, and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (601-800), as well as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (1,001-1,200). Several institutions maintained their respective rankings, including UUM, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (1,001-1,200), Multimedia University, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (1,201-1,500), as well as Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (1,501+). The 20th edition of the rankings also featured Universiti Malaysia Perlis and newcomer Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (1,201-1,500), as well as Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (1,501+).

The rankings evaluated research-intensive universities based on 18 performance indicators grouped into five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry. This year, four new metrics were introduced, including three related to research quality and one assessing patents in the industry pillar. Malaysian universities performed above average in the student-staff ratio and excelled in the metric of studying abroad. They also outperformed the world average in the international pillar, showing consistent growth since 2021. However, their performance in the industry pillar has declined.

In the 2024 edition, a total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions were ranked. Globally, Oxford University in the United Kingdom retained the top position for the eighth consecutive year, followed by Stanford University as the top-ranked university in the United States, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in third place. China has the highest-ranked universities in Asia and is the most represented continent, with 737 participating universities. It is also the continent showing the most improvement in teaching and research quality.
