The general manager of Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, has addressed concerns about radiation from telecommunication structures, emphasizing that health is a priority during their construction.

Based on studies, Tiong stated that electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions from radio communications infrastructure in public areas are very low and do not pose any health risks to the surrounding population.

He urged the media to help disseminate accurate information about EMF and to educate the public to eliminate their concerns regarding telecommunication structures.

Recently, a group of 23 homeowners in Bakam, Miri, signed a petition opposing the erection of a 5G telecommunications tower near their houses, claiming they were not consulted and expressing concerns about the tower’s safety.

Tiong reassured the public that the 5G network is safe for public health and has the capability to connect a million devices in a one-square-kilometer area, compared to only 1,000 devices with LTE technology.

SMA is collaborating with Digital National Bhd (DNB) to establish a 5G ecosystem in Sarawak, which has the potential to revolutionize daily life in various aspects.

Tiong added that the installation of telecommunication infrastructure by service providers in residential areas of Sarawak’s cities is currently ongoing to support the implementation of a high-speed 5G network.

Unlike previous technologies, 5G offers a minimal latency of just one millisecond, enabling more efficient and precise remote device control.

It is crucial to rely on accurate data rather than rumors from unverified sources to address concerns about EMF and ensure public safety.

Overall, the development of telecommunication structures prioritizes health and aims to bring the benefits of 5G technology to the people of Sarawak.
