KOTA KINABALU: On Tuesday (Oct 31), smugglers evaded capture by tossing numerous plastic bags filled with illegal alcohol into the sea off Labuan before escaping into the night. The suspects were initially traveling from Kiansam waters to Brunei Bay when they caught the attention of a marine police patrol vessel at 7pm. Region Four Marine Police Commander Asst Comm Ahmad Ariffin stated that the authorities attempted to inspect the boat, but it suddenly sped away. In their pursuit, the marine police witnessed the individuals on the boat disposing of dark plastic bags into the water. However, due to limited visibility and the significant distance between the vessels, the marine police decided not to continue chasing the boat. Upon returning, they discovered approximately 32 cartons of alcoholic drinks floating on the sea, estimated to be worth over RM5,000.

These seized items have been retrieved from the water and taken to their jetty for further investigation under the Customs Act 1967.

Region Four Marine Police Commander Asst Comm Ahmad Ariffin specified that the confiscated items were fished out and will be thoroughly examined. The act of smuggling contraband alcohol is a violation of the Customs Act 1967. The estimated value of the seized items stands at over RM5,000.

The suspects’ evasion tactics involved disposing of the illegal goods into the sea, a method employed to evade capture. The pursuit was called off due to various factors, including limited visibility and the distance between the vessels. It remains to be seen how the investigation will ensue and whether the identities of the evading smugglers can be determined.
