KULAI: Social media scams have resulted in the loss of over RM300mil since 2021, according to Teo Nie Ching, the Deputy Communications and Digital Minister. She revealed that in the first half of this year alone, RM60mil was lost due to Facebook-related frauds, while RM25mil was lost on Instagram. Although social media platforms offer great convenience, they also expose the public to the risks of cyber crimes.
Teo cautioned the public about the growing number of criminals utilizing social media for illegal activities. She stressed the importance of not easily falling prey to these scams. In 2021, reported losses from Facebook scams amounted to RM80mil, a number that increased to RM92mil the following year. On Instagram, losses rose from RM20mil in 2021 to RM25mil in 2022.
In response to this alarming trend, a meeting was recently held with representatives from Meta Platforms, the operator of popular social media applications such as Facebook and Instagram. Teo presented the figures to prove the gravity of the issue involving their platforms.
“During the meeting, we delivered a strong message to the representatives, who promised to enhance their efforts in combating illegal activities,” stated Teo, who also presented a cheque to Kulai Ultimate MMA Fitness and Self-defense.
On a separate matter, Teo informed the public that police investigations have been initiated in 38 cases related to online comments or posts concerning sensitive 3R (race, religion, and royalty) issues. Of these cases, 15 were religion-related, 14 involved royalty, and nine pertained to race. Furthermore, the police are currently investigating an additional 95 cases involving other sensitive issues posted online. Teo emphasized that both her ministry and the police would continue to monitor the situation.
With the upcoming state elections, Teo urged all parties to refrain from making statements that touch on the sensitive 3R issues. While the government respects and upholds freedom of speech, she emphasized the need for candidates to avoid exploiting these issues for emotional impact.
