KOTA KINABALU: Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub (pic) has raised concerns about PAS’ decision not to appeal the result of the election petition for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat. He believes that this decision implies an admission of corruption during the 15th General Election (GE15).
In his opinion, the failure to submit an appeal suggests a confession. Salahuddin questions why PAS would choose not to appeal if they are being accused of corruption. He argues that if the allegation is merely a technical issue, it could be disregarded. However, if corruption is being alleged, it is suspicious that PAS would choose not to appeal.
“I find this decision strange because if we strongly oppose bribery, then logically, we should appeal the case at the Court of Appeal,” Salahuddin told reporters on Sunday (July 9).
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan stated on Saturday (July 8) that the decision not to appeal was made to ensure that the welfare of the people was not neglected while the case was pending, and the absence of an MP would not hinder progress.
The Terengganu election court had annulled the victory of PAS candidate Ahmad Amzad Hashim in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat during GE15 on June 27. The petitioner, Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong, successfully proved that corruption had occurred with the intention of influencing voters. Ahmad Amzad had won the seat with a majority of 40,907 votes, defeating three other challengers, including Mohd Zubir. – Bernama
