Early awareness is crucial in the battle against breast cancer, as it can make the difference between life and death. Breast cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Malaysian women, claiming around nine lives every day. Shockingly, nearly half of new diagnoses are made in the advanced stages of the disease, indicating a significant lack of public awareness.
In support of Pink October, Medicos, a disposable face mask manufacturer, has launched the limited edition Medicos HydroCharge Pink Ribbon 2023 surgical face mask. These masks feature an artistic butterfly motif inspired by the iconic pink ribbon, serving as a visual reminder to spread awareness and initiate conversations about breast health. The motivation behind Medicos’ dedication to the Pink Ribbon Campaign comes from the personal experience of their CEO, William Wong, whose mother battled and survived breast cancer.
William Wong’s emotional connection drives him to support breast cancer awareness and education for Malaysian women. In partnership with the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA), a non-profit organization dedicated to breast health education and supporting women affected by breast cancer, Medicos will contribute RM5 from each box of the limited edition face masks to BCWA.
BCWA offers various services, including education, psychosocial support, and recovery assistance. Moreover, they provide guidance for life after treatment, establishing a comprehensive support network for breast cancer patients. The organization is led by a team of courageous survivors who run the executive committee, using their personal conviction to give back to the community after overcoming breast cancer.
Kim Lim, the president of BCWA, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in August 2020. After a challenging seven-month journey involving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, Lim urges women to be self-aware of their bodies and to take action if they notice any unusual lumps. She emphasizes the importance of not facing the battle alone and highlights the support BCWA provides, including friendship, counseling, and essential items like mastectomy bras and wigs.
Naliza Fahro Rozi, also known as Nal, the vice-president of BCWA and a breast cancer survivor, shares her own 18-month battle with mastectomy surgery and various forms of chemotherapy. She encourages individuals to stay positive and tackle challenges step by step. Nal also emphasizes the role of insurance in enabling her to receive urgent treatment at a private hospital, avoiding potentially detrimental delays.
