The Election Commission (EC) of Malaysia will convene a special meeting on Thursday, August 24, to determine important dates for the forthcoming Pelangai state by-election in Pahang. This by-election has been necessitated by the vacancy created by the unfortunate demise of incumbent Datuk Seri Johari Harun on August 17. EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak announced this in a statement issued on August 21.

Furthermore, Ikmalrudin also stated that the upcoming special meeting agenda would include discussions on various aspects of the Pelangai state by-election, such as the issuance of the writ of election, nomination of candidates, polling dates, usage of electoral rolls, and other preparations for conducting a successful by-election. The meeting will be chaired by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, and a press conference will take place following the session.

It is important to note that the EC had received an official notification from Pahang State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin regarding the vacancy in the Pelangai seat. In accordance with Chapter IV Article 26 (5) of the Laws of Constitution of Pahang Government, it is mandatory to fill the casual vacancy within 60 days from the date it was determined by the EC.

Datuk Seri Johari Harun was tragically among the ten individuals who lost their lives in a plane crash on the Guthrie Highway near Bandar Elmina in Shah Alam on August 17. The crashed aircraft was identified as a Beechcraft Model 390 (Premier 1). This incident has deeply impacted the political landscape in the Pelangai state, subsequently leading to the upcoming by-election.
