Adam Adli, the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, stated that there have been no discussions at the ministry level regarding the proposal for Malaysia to host the 2038 Asian Games. He highlighted that since the hosting of the games is far off, it may need to be reviewed, especially considering that the National Sports Vision only extends until 2030.
He emphasized the importance of careful planning, taking into account costs, economic impact, and the development of athletes. Adam Adli stressed the need to focus on the welfare and well-being of the people and the development of athletes at the grassroots level. He also mentioned the ministry’s limited allocations and dependency on government funding compared to other sectors.
Adam Adli mentioned the establishment of the Fast Track Road To Gold Special Programme by KBS, with an allocation of RM1.15mil for preparing and training athletes for diving and squash for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Athletes in this programme will receive adequate facilities and support for local and international competitions.
He further clarified that marital status does not hinder the potential or progress of athletes, citing the example of shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi who competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London while pregnant. He emphasized that marital status has never been a barrier for athletes in achieving success.
Addressing the involvement of senior athletes over 30 years old, Adam Adli mentioned only three divers in that age group are currently listed under the National Sports Council’s training programme. These athletes include Datuk Pandelela Rinong Pamg, Wendy Ng Yan Yee, and Ooi Tze Liang.
In conclusion, Adam Adli reiterated the importance of careful planning and consideration of various factors before committing to hosting the 2038 Asian Games. He emphasized the ministry’s focus on the well-being of athletes and the limited resources available. He also highlighted the success of athletes regardless of their marital status and the presence of senior athletes in training programmes.
