Villagers in Kampung Orang Asli Bersah, Pos Kuala Mu, Sungai Siput, no longer have to travel 19km to Pos Legap to make phone calls or use the Internet. The village chief, Hadu Long, expressed his appreciation to the government for providing satellite coverage and broadband wireless access at the village surau since 2021. This has allowed the villagers to stay connected with their children who work outside the village and has also enabled chalet operators to promote the village’s tourism destination through social media.
Thanks to an upgrade to the nearby communications tower in Kuala Mu, visitors to the village no longer face issues with phone coverage. During a visit by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) with network provider Numix, Hadu expressed his hope that the improved connectivity would be used responsibly and not misused.
Kampung Orang Asli Bersah is located about an hour’s travel from Sungai Siput and has a population of around 500 residents from 49 families. The Perak MCMC director, Mohd Irwan Mohamed, stated that the installation of the broadband wireless access network in October 2021 has allowed the villagers to have Internet services for free within the coverage area while existing facilities are being upgraded. He also mentioned that 73 locations in Perak have been selected under the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela) to provide communications coverage using satellite technology.
During a visit to Kampung Pong, Gerik, the Perak MCMC director (development), Muhammad Fairuz Abdullah, announced plans to improve Internet coverage by upgrading the telecommunications tower using fibre technology. This upgrade is expected to provide better quality and faster 2G and 4G speeds. The facility will benefit the over 120 villagers, including children who require it for learning purposes.
