Construction of the widening project for the Jalan Yew-Jalan Sungai Besi flyover in Kuala Lumpur will proceed as planned, despite objections from stakeholders. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has announced that road closures will take place in phases to facilitate construction works, starting next month and continuing until Dec 31, 2025. The project, which costs RM96 million and falls under the Finance Ministry, will be executed by DBKL. One of the project components includes the construction of a new ramp near the Loke Yew roundabout from Jalan Sungai Besi to Petaling Jaya. The main purpose of widening the flyover is to accommodate motorists heading to Tun Razak Exchange (TRX).

Stakeholders have expressed concerns about the project due to its expected lengthy duration of completion, which will disrupt business operations. They are also worried about the proximity of the ramp to their establishments. With less than a month left to prepare, affected motorists in the area must also make necessary arrangements to cope with the upcoming road closures.

The Against the Widening of Jalan Yew Action Committee secretary, Apple Chai, stated that the group held a briefing with DBKL to discuss the project details. Chai emphasized the need to focus on minimizing the project’s impact and clarified that meetings with authorities and stakeholders would be conducted to ensure everyone understands the project’s implications. She also highlighted concerns about roadworks and reduced parking availability affecting businesses along Jalan Yew. Malaysian Hawkers and Traders Association Coalition president, Datuk Rosli Sulaiman, pledged to work with DBKL to mitigate the project’s impact on traders and emphasized the importance of maintaining smooth traffic flow in the area.

Cheras MP, Tan Kok Wai, previously penned a letter to Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, requesting a temporary delay to devise a more people-friendly alternative plan. Tan expressed concerns about the current proposal negatively affecting businesses located on Jalan Yew, Jalan Sungai Besi, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Pasar, and Jalan Loke Yew. While acknowledging the necessity of the road widening project to improve traffic flow to TRX, Tan urged the Prime Minister to explore alternative plans that would minimize the impact on stakeholders.
