KOTA KINABALU: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions), Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, emphasized the importance of regularly updating the Standing Order on Disaster Management Operations (PTO) for Earthquakes to ensure the country’s preparedness in facing such eventualities. In order to keep up with the times and the latest technology used by various agencies involved, Armizan highlighted the need for updates to reflect technologies and applications related to earthquakes, including digital mapping technology, remote sensing, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) provided by the Survey and Mapping Department of Malaysia (Jupem).
“The Earthquake PTO is also very important because we are always dealing with extreme and unexpected weather changes,” Armizan stated. He further added that the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), as the leading national disaster management agency, is responsible for conducting workshops to update the Earthquake PTO. These workshops aim to obtain input and advisory services from the agencies involved. Moreover, Armizan emphasized the significance of revising the Earthquake PTO document in line with the disaster management landscape in Malaysia and at the international level to ensure its effectiveness.
Referring to the earthquake risk assessment conducted in Sabah, Armizan stated that the state is located in an area where earthquakes could potentially occur. Among the districts in Sabah, Ranau faces the highest risk, while districts like Kota Belud, Tuaran, and Kota Marudu face medium risk. In light of this, he emphasized the need for a proactive approach in disaster risk assessment and management. Armizan mentioned that the Earthquake PTO was initially issued in 2011 and is now due for a review. With the cooperation of agencies involved in various aspects, including disaster management, economy, technology, and community engagement, the country can better prepare itself for potential earthquakes.
The Earthquake PTO Review Workshop, which was closed by Armizan on Thursday (July 13) night, serves as a platform for sharing the latest information and capabilities of each agency involved. The workshop facilitates necessary amendments and revisions to the Earthquake PTO document, ensuring that it remains effective and aligned with current disaster management practices. Armizan highlighted the importance of strengthening management aspects during and after disasters, such as the provision of aid to victims. By being proactive in assessing disaster risks, the country can enhance its overall preparedness.
