Prominent journalist Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai has been chosen to speak on behalf of Malaysia at the upcoming World Media Summit in Guangzhou and Kunming, China, from December 1 onwards. He will be among representatives from more than 200 media outlets worldwide, alongside government officials and international organization representatives.

Wong will address the session on “Seeking Growth – Media’s Worldwide Cooperation for a Better Future”, where he will advocate for improved media ties as a means to combat the spread of fake news.

The 5th World Media Summit (WMS) is themed “Boosting Global Conference, Promoting Media Development” and will span a week. It was jointly established in 2009 by a consortium of international media organizations including Xinhua News Agency, the Associated Press, and Reuters.

WMS has stated that media practitioners will engage in extensive discussions on shared interests and concerns, such as the role of media in promoting common interests, technological opportunities, new markets, and the formation of alliances.

In addressing the summit, Wong expressed his concerns about the pervasiveness of fake news and misinformation, stating that it has become a significant issue on a global scale.

He highlighted the wide-ranging implications of fake news, including its use for political defamation and lies, as well as its exploitation by scammers to defraud people of their hard-earned money.

Wong has also expressed his hope to use the summit as an opportunity to learn from his fellow media professionals and to share his insights on Malaysia’s media landscape.

Wong’s presence at the World Media Summit signifies Malaysia’s commitment to cooperate with the global community in addressing critical issues facing the media industry, and to contribute to the development of responsible and ethical journalism worldwide.
