Amirudin Shari Aims to Continue Leading Selangor Government if PH-BN Coalition Wins

SHAH ALAM: In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the caretaker Selangor mentri besar and chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Selangor, expressed his desire to continue helming the state government if the PH-BN coalition emerges victorious in the upcoming elections. Amirudin emphasized his commitment to implementing the state’s development plans, promoting the sustainability of the economy, and ensuring the well-being of the people.

“I firmly believe I have a duty to fulfill and execute the plans promised to the people, especially under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), despite the fact that they require teamwork,” said Amirudin, affirming his aspiration to defend his Sungai Tua state seat this time around.

The Gombak MP also dismissed rumors about a potential role change from mentri besar to a federal minister after the state elections. He clarified, “While there is speculation circulating, Selangor PH is determined to retain me as mentri besar. There have been no discussions regarding altering my role with the PH chairman and Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim). However, as a member of the party, I will adhere to any decisions made by the party leadership.”

Amirudin has served as the assemblyman for Sungai Dua (formerly known as the Batu Caves state constituency) since the 14th General Election in 2018. On June 19, 2018, he took oath as mentri besar before Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah following Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s resignation from the post to assume the position of Economic Affairs Minister.

Addressing Perikatan Nasional (PN), Amirudin criticized the coalition for failing to nominate a candidate for mentri besar. Despite PN leaders, including Mohamed Azmin, presenting themselves as champions of the Selangor people, their reluctance to name a candidate indicates a lack of confidence in the former mentri besar. Even though PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin previously announced that Bersatu would assume the post in the event of a coalition victory, Amirudin highlighted the uncertainty surrounding PN’s eventual candidate.

Amidst this uncertainty, Amirudin appealed to the people to vote wisely for the PH-BN coalition in the upcoming elections. He highlighted the achievements of the current administration, which has steered Selangor to become the most economically and socially successful state despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and global economic downturn.

The Election Commission has scheduled the polls for Selangor, Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Negeri Sembilan on August 12, with nominations set for July 29 and early voting on August 8. – Bernama
