KLANG: The upcoming state elections in Selangor will see four executive council members stepping down from their positions. While two of them are leaving politics altogether, the other two have transitioned into becoming Members of Parliament. One notable departure is DAP’s Datuk Teng Chang Khim, who has had a long and successful career in Selangor politics. Teng, who served as the Speaker after the 2008 polls and as a senior exco member for two consecutive terms after the 2013 and 2018 elections, will be leaving his role as the Selangor investment, industry and commerce, and small and medium enterprises committee chairman. With over 28 years of political experience, Teng’s retirement marks the end of an era.
Another exco member bidding farewell is Amanah’s Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud, who has been an elected representative for three terms. Having gained prominence in 2008, she served as the Kota Raja MP for two terms before running for the Seri Serdang state seat in the 2018 general election. Dr Siti Mariah helmed important portfolios concerning public health, unity, women, and family development in the Selangor executive council. While she has not explicitly stated her retirement plans, it is widely believed that Batu Tiga incumbent assemblyman Rodziah Ismail will also not be defending her seat, since she is now the Ampang MP. As the former housing, urban well-being, and entrepreneur development committee chairman, Rodziah’s absence will be felt in Selangor politics.
Meanwhile, V. Ganabathirau, another Selangor exco member, has moved on to become the Klang MP and will therefore not be defending his Kota Kemuning seat. Ganabathirau, who was responsible for the socio-economic development, social welfare, and workers empowerment portfolios, has left an impact on the state’s progress. With these departures, the Selangor political landscape is set to witness new faces and potential changes in the upcoming state elections.
