KUALA TERENGGANU: Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister, has dismissed Perikatan Nasional’s claim that they can bring down the Federal Government through state elections, stating that it is both impossible and unhelpful for the country’s recovery. He argues that those who made such claims are ignorant of the anti-party hopping law, which now requires elected representatives to give up their seats if they defect from their political party.
Ahmad Faizal Azumu, the Bersatu deputy president, made the claim while campaigning in Negri Sembilan, stating that a change in government could still be achieved even with the anti-party hopping law in place. However, Nik Nazmi highlights that the country has already experienced multiple changes in governments, including the Sheraton Move in 2020 and the change of prime minister in 2021.
Expressing the need for stability, Nik Nazmi emphasizes that the King and the people have voiced their desire for economic growth, investments, and job creation. He believes that talk like this will not benefit the country and urges the opposition to be responsible in their actions.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Pakatan Harapan activists campaigning in the Terengganu polls, Nik Nazmi stresses the importance of working towards the country’s progress. Besides Terengganu, Pakatan and its ally Barisan are also competing against Perikatan in the state polls in Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kelantan, and Kedah.
It is worth noting that the outcome of state polls does not impact parliamentary seats.
