There is growing speculation that former Seberang Jaya assemblyman, Dr Afif Bahardin, may be chosen as a Perikatan Nasional candidate in Selangor for the upcoming state elections, rather than in Penang.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Dr Afif’s role as Selangor Perikatan liaison secretary indicates that he has already been involved in state-related work, making him a strong contender for a candidacy.
However, it has not been confirmed which seat Dr Afif will be contesting in Selangor.
The Star has been unable to obtain Dr Afif’s comments on this matter at this time.
In the 15th General Election (GE15), Dr Afif ran for the Shah Alam parliamentary seat but lost to Pakatan Harapan candidate Azli Yusof, who secured a majority of 18,095 votes.
Previously, Dr Afif served as a two-term assemblyman for Seberang Jaya, having won the seat under a PKR ticket.
Like several other PKR representatives, Dr Afif left the party to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia after the “Sheraton Move”.
There are a total of 56 seats up for grabs in Selangor during the state elections.
Perikatan Nasional intends to contest in all 56 seats.
Nomination for the state elections will take place on July 29, with polling scheduled for August 12.
