As the by-election campaigning enters the cooling-off day today, candidates are taking measures to maintain their good health as they approach the finish line.
Since nomination day on Aug 26, their schedules have been filled with walkabouts, ceramah, and other campaign activities.
Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya, the Perikatan Nasional candidate for the Simpang Jeram state seat, shared that he has been closely monitoring his blood pressure and sugar level throughout the campaign period. Being a vascular surgeon, he believes in the importance of keeping track of these numbers and practicing what he advises his patients.
Dr Mohd Mazri’s wife, who is also a doctor, checks his blood pressure and sugar level daily. Although he tries to avoid sweet drinks, it can be challenging to decline offers during campaign visits. Therefore, he checks his sugar level to ensure he doesn’t consume excessive amounts.
Additionally, Dr Mohd Mazri tries to prioritize sufficient sleep and considers the walking during his campaign as part of his exercise routine.
Nazri Abdul Rahman, the Pakatan Harapan candidate for Simpang Jeram, mentioned that he takes a spoonful of honey every day due to its believed health benefits. Despite the busy campaign schedule, he ensures he eats breakfast regularly and rests whenever possible to prevent fatigue.
Suhaizan Kayat, the Pakatan candidate for the Pulai parliamentary seat, focuses on staying hydrated throughout the day as activities like meeting voters and giving speeches can strain his voice. He also takes short power naps during car rides to compensate for the lack of sleep at night. Suhaizan’s wife, Dr Nosham Idris, accompanies him on the campaign trail, bringing joy to his packed schedule.
On the other hand, Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan adheres to a strict diet even before the campaign period. He avoids oily and fried food, takes regular supplements, and ensures he doesn’t skip meals. If he has to miss a meal due to conflicting schedules, he snacks on chocolates in the car to avoid an empty stomach.
Overall, the candidates are mindful of their health during the intense campaign period, adopting various practices to stay in good shape.
