LONDON: Sabah showcased its Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark as a natural treasure and promoted it as a tourism attraction at the World Travel Market in London. The chairman of Sabah Tourism Board, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, emphasized the stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, geological wonders, and natural beauty of the geopark. He also mentioned that the declaration of the Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark recognized Sabah as the third location in the world, after China and Korea, to achieve the prestigious triple crown status. Prior to this recognition, Sabah had already received Unesco “crowns” for Kinabalu Park and the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve.

According to Bangkuai, the Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark is regarded among the most extraordinary natural and cultural wonders in the world. He emphasized the crucial role of Sabah Parks in protecting, managing, and promoting the geological heritage within the geopark. He also highlighted Sabah’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices, expressing that Sabah is not only a destination but also a commitment to preserve the planet’s natural wonders for future generations.

The Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark covers an area of 4,750 sq km and spans the districts of Ranau, Kota Marudu, and Kota Belud. It is also home to various rural villages, with the local communities playing a vital role in preserving the region’s unique culture and heritage. Bangkuai described the World Travel Market 2023 as a significant moment for Sabah and an opportunity to showcase their latest Unesco crown jewel to the world. He invited the global travel and tourism community to experience the splendor of the geopark and contribute to its sustainable development and global awareness.
