KUALA LUMPUR: Steps are being taken to strengthen security measures and prevent the unauthorized disclosure of data from the electronic medical records (EMR) system, according to Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
During the conclusion of the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday(Sept 19), the Health Minister stated that the enforcement, control, and protection of data, including the confidentiality of patient information, have been outlined in accordance with ICT policies and the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Access to the data will be restricted only to authorized personnel, as stipulated in the Guidelines for the Management of Medical Records of Patients in the Health Ministry’s facility.
“Audit trails will be conducted periodically to monitor access to the EMR, ensuring compliance with the policies,” she added.
Furthermore, a multi-level verification system will be implemented to access the medical records.

Data migration will also be secured through encryption.
Dr Zaliha addressed the security concerns of the EMR in response to a question raised by Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari (PH-Sungai Petani).
In May, Dr Zaliha revealed in an exclusive interview with The Star that the EMR system is slated for a nationwide rollout by 2026, ensuring improved and seamless healthcare services for patients at public healthcare facilities.
