KOTA KINABALU: A tragic incident occurred in Lahad Datu district as a stillborn baby was discovered discarded in a garbage chute at the Fajar area. The baby boy, wrapped in a grey striped blouse, was found by garbage collectors around 11.30pm on Saturday (July 15), according to Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Dr Rohan Shah Ahmad. The child was found in a pile of garbage in the rubbish chute by a 44-year-old garbage collector employed by a private cleaning contractor. This shocking discovery has prompted an immediate investigation by the police.
The baby’s lifeless body has been sent for post-mortem at the Lahad Datu Hospital. ACP Rohan Shah Ahmad stated that the police are investigating the case under Section 318, which deals with the concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body. If convicted in court, this offense carries a potential jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
In their efforts to solve this heartbreaking case, the police are actively working on tracking down the individuals involved in the disposal of the baby. ACP Rohan Shah Ahmad further urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
