Senior journalists have expressed their disapproval of any attempts to use the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as a means to question, censor, or block online news content and portals. In a statement, they emphasized their concerns regarding the recent summoning of media practitioners by the MCMC to explain the content carried on their news portals and online sites.

The journalists are particularly alarmed by the fact that many of the labeled “offensive” content consists of reports and opinion pieces that are critical of the government. They firmly oppose any utilization of a state body like the MCMC for the purpose of censorship, questioning, or blocking of online news content and portals.

The track record of previous governments in acting swiftly upon even minor complaints from the public or ruling elite has created further worries among the journalists. They assert that the present government had initially promised to facilitate the free flow of information and encourage a vibrant free press.

Moreover, the number of complaints by media practitioners about their blocked websites has been increasing. This trend is deemed unhealthy and requires immediate action to prevent its continuation. The journalists argue that the regulatory body, such as the MCMC, should prioritize other matters over blocking websites.

While acknowledging that the internet has become a platform for spreading hate and misinformation globally, the journalists firmly believe that media practitioners operate with discipline, professionalism, and ethical guidelines. They recognize that the challenge lies within the uncontrollable nature of social media and the prevalence of fake news and misinformation.

However, the journalists also stress the importance of a free press in the country and call upon the government to establish an environment that allows media practitioners to work without fear or bias. They emphasize the need for the government to create the right ecosystem and conducive conditions for the media.

The statement is jointly signed by prominent figures in the journalism industry, including Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar, Datuk A Kadir Jasin, Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacob, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, Datuk Chamil Wariya, Datuk Yong Soo Heong, Datuk Zakaria Wahab, and Dr G Manimaran.
