IN AN effort to address illegal dumping and to streamline rubbish management, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) distributed over 200 bins to the joint management body (JMB) managing several strata properties in Pusat Bandar Puchong.

MBSJ subsidised the purchase, distribution and placement of 204 units of 240-litre rubbish bins on a one-off basis to TCL Management and Services, the JMB managing strata properties located at Jalan Bandar 1 to 12, Pusat Bandar Puchong.

Zone 16 MBSJ councillor George Yap said the illegal rubbish dumping problem in the Jalan Bandar area was from two sources.

“The strata properties in that area comprise commercial entities such as shops and restaurants on the ground floor, and residential units on the upper floors.

“The residential units don’t have designated bins for domestic waste, which is why the occupants tend to throw rubbish by the roadside.

“Another problem is the commercial waste thrown by business operators, who take the easy way out in disposing rubbish instead of appointing proper waste contractors,” he said, adding that the commercial rubbish included polystyrene and large packaging materials.

Yap said the rubbish bins subsidised by MBSJ were for domestic waste only.

The bins are placed in yellow-painted square boxes and the KDEB Waste Management contractor has to return the bins to the yellow boxes on collection day.

“The JMB will ask property owners to advise occupants of residential units to dispose of their domestic waste into the bins provided,” he said.

“Meanwhile, business operators have to engage their own contractors for rubbish collection, a list of which is available on MBSJ’s website.”

Yap said MBSJ stepped in to help as the JMB was unable to do so due to poor maintenance fee collection rate of about 30% among occupants comprising mainly of foreigners.

“All these efforts are to clean up and rejuvenate this part of Pusat Bandar Puchong,” he said.

The bins were distributed by MBSJ Environmental Management Department.

Yap was speaking at a press conference during a visit to Taman Wawasan morning market in Pusat Bandar Puchong.

Separately, MBSJ’s Corporate and Strategic Management Department said in a statement that the bin distribution was to ensure proper disposal of rubbish.

“The city council has also organised several initiatives to address cleanliness in Jalan Bandar,” the statement said.
