IPOH: A buffalo that wandered onto the North-South Expressway (NSE) caused a five-car pile-up that left five people injured.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre officer-in-charge Mohd Hamidi Manas said the incident occurred at KM200 southbound on the NSE, near the Kamunting toll, at 3.50am on Saturday (Aug 12).

Mohd Hamidi said the incident occurred after a car carrying four people crashed into the animal which had strayed onto the expressway.

“This led to a pile-up involving the four other cars,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Hamidi said the four people in the first car sustained some light injuries in the incident.

“One person in another vehicle was also injured, while those in the remaining cars were unhurt,” he said, adding that the buffalo was killed.

“No one was trapped in the vehicles, and the injured were rushed to Hospital Taiping in three ambulances,” he added.

Mohd Hamidi said all the vehicles involved in the incident have been handed over to the police and PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) for further action.

This incident serves as a reminder to drivers to remain vigilant and cautious while on the road. Animals may unexpectedly stray onto highways, posing serious risks to both themselves and motorists. It is important for drivers to pay attention to road signs, especially in areas prone to wildlife crossings, and to exercise caution, particularly during nighttime when visibility is reduced.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of animal conservation and the measures taken to prevent such accidents from occurring. Efforts such as wildlife fencing and crossings have been implemented to minimize the chances of animal-vehicle collisions. Nevertheless, it remains crucial for drivers to remain alert and react appropriately in unexpected situations to ensure the safety of all road users.
