According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck off the northwest coast of Sumatra, Indonesia at 1.19 pm on Saturday (Dec 30).
The statement also revealed that the earthquake, with a depth of 19 kilometres (km), occurred at a distance of 323 km west of Simeulue, Indonesia.
Despite the tremor, there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the occurrence, officials have assured. – Bernama
