SMK Bandar Puncak Jalil’s Team Tri-C-Cle emerged as the winners among schools in Peninsular Malaysia, while Team Sentinels from SMK Bintulu took the lead in Sarawak in the Shell NXplorers 2023 Challenge for their respective regions.
Both schools will be participating in the national Shell NXplorers Malaysia challenge on November 8.
Shell’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) competition aims to challenge students to develop solutions to real-world problems related to food, water, and energy.
Team Tri-C-Cle’s members, Choong Yan Ying, Chong Zi Hao, and Chan Kit Yeong, created the Voice Guardian, a mobile app that connects to emergency services when a specific safe-word voice command is spoken, ensuring immediate assistance in critical situations.
Team Tri-C-Cle stated that the critical thinking skills they learned in the program helped them understand, identify, and delve deeper into real-life problems, enabling them to come up with solutions that create positive change.
Seven other schools competed in the peninsula edition, including SMK Aminuddin Baki, SMK Bandar Puncak Jalil, SMK Bukit Damansara Utama, SMK Bukit Sentosa, SMK Putrajaya Presint 11(1), SMK Seksyen 9, SMK Taman Sri Rampai, and SMK Zon R1 Wangsa Maju.

In Sarawak, Team Sentinels’ members, Jaynerson Joelee, Anselm Wong Jing Ern, and Allyson Yot Linton, invented Mr Mister, a portable mist sprayer that utilizes temperature and humidity sensors to detect and respond to varying environmental conditions.
The accompanying app allows users to precisely control the mist sprayer’s cooling thresholds and adjust the misting levels according to their needs.
Team Sentinels mentioned that the program helped them think outside the box and understand the value of teamwork.
The other seven competing schools were SMK Asyakirin, SMK Baru Bintulu, SMK Kidurong, SMK Lutong, SMK Pujut, SMK Riam, and SMK Singai.
Shell Malaysia’s legal head, Rodziah Zainudin, expressed the organization’s aim to develop students who will become innovators and make discoveries that address real-world issues while meeting national aspirations for a sustainable future.
“We are focused on empowering students to take an early interest in the fields of engineering, IT, and automation by providing them with the necessary tools, guidance, and mentorship.”
Shell Malaysia’s Upstream general manager (Sarawak Gas), Choong Yen Li, was impressed by the innovative solutions developed by the finalists.
“This is proof that fostering STEM education from an early stage has an impact on developing future leaders who will strive to contribute to a sustainable future.”
With the support of the Ministry of Education, Shell NXplorers Malaysia collaborated with over 1,000 students from 26 secondary schools, offering them the opportunity to gain hands-on STEM learning, with a specific focus on technology.
