KULAI: Teo Nie Ching has announced that a study will be conducted to examine potential improvements to the existing Communications and Multimedia Act. The Deputy Communications and Digital Minister revealed that the Ministry intends to present the study’s findings in Parliament by the end of this year or early next year. She stated, “The Act was enacted in 1998 and we feel that the time has come for us to review it once again to make sure that the existing provisions are sufficient to tackle the cybercrimes we see today. This is among the efforts by the Ministry and we will also have engagements with stakeholders on this matter,” while also mentioning that the Ministry will refer to similar laws in other countries, including Singapore. Teo made these remarks to the press before attending a patriotic movie screening in Kulai on Sunday (Sept 17).
In addition, Teo mentioned that the Ministry aims to increase the accountability of service providers under the amended Act. She expressed concerns about service providers claiming to merely provide a platform for users, stating, “We don’t think that that is the right approach and we want them to be held more responsible.”
