KUALA LUMPUR: According to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, several subsidiaries under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry’s agencies may be closed and merged with other agencies. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development stated that this action will only apply to subsidiaries that are not making significant profits. He further explained that the proposal to the Finance Ministry is to close down unprofitable subsidiaries under MARA and other agencies, merging them with others. This statement was made during a press conference at the Jualan Desa Madani programme in Menara MARA on August 28.

Zahid emphasized the ministry’s determination to ensure that all subsidiaries generate profits, as this would enable the ministry to fund activities and programs beneficial to the public. He added, “My goal for this agency is not to be a ‘cost centre’, but rather a profit center. We are taking these measures to reduce the financial burden on the Finance Ministry.”

Additionally, the ministry is proposing the establishment of a new education institution called “Jelita TVET,” aimed at assisting women entrepreneurs regardless of their racial background. Zahid also highlighted the ministry’s plans for agencies under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to contribute to achieving food security in the country, thus reducing food imports.

When asked about the Jualan Desa Madani program, Zahid announced a discount of up to 50% on all items sold until August 30. He stated, “Starting now until August 30, we are offering a discount of 30% to 50% for all items sold at Jualan Madani.”
