The newly elected Pulai MP, Suhaizan Kayat, was sworn in as a member of the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Sept 19). He took his oath in front of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
The Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats were defended by Pakatan Harapan in the by-elections triggered by the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, the previous elected representative for both constituencies.
Suhaizan emerged victorious with 48,283 votes, securing an 18,641-vote majority over his opponents Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional-Bersatu (29,642 votes) and Independent Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi (465).
Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, aged 61 and former domestic trade and cost of living minister, unfortunately suffered a brain haemorrhage on July 22. He underwent surgery the following morning but passed away on July 23.
Simultaneously, Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, the former Bachok MP, took his oath as a senator in the Dewan Negara. This ceremony took place in front of Senate President Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. Nik Mohamad Abduh was nominated by the Kelantan state assembly.
Nik Mohamad Abduh will be replacing Mohamad Affandi Mohamad, whose term as a senator ended on July 7. It is worth mentioning that Nik Mohamad Abduh, the son of the late Tan Sri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, a former PAS spiritual leader, had been dropped as a candidate for the 15th General Election by PAS.
