JOHOR BARU: Suhaizan Kayat says he has received more than 30 requests from voters – even though he has not been sworn-in as Pulai MP yet.
The Johor Amanah vice-chairman, who won the by-election for the seat on Saturday (Sept 9), said the letters and applications were from voters asking for better infrastructure and programmes.
“My team and I also noted the people’s grouses during the two-week campaign period, including requests for mosques, repairs for other houses of worship, a Tamil vernacular school, as well as more meaningful programmes for women and youth.
“As MPs, our job is more towards policy-making but I will try my best to address voters’ requests as I do not want to sideline anyone,” he said when met at an appreciation lunch for voters and supporters in Taman Bukit Indah on Sunday (Sept 10).
When asked when he would be sworn in, Suhaizan said he had yet to receive an official letter.
“Probably next Tuesday (Sept 12) or Wednesday (Sept 13),” he said.
On Saturday (Sept 9), Pakatan defended the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats in the by-elections, triggered by the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub who held both constituencies.
Suhaizan secured 48,283 votes, an 18,641-vote majority over his opponents Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional-Bersatu (29,642 votes), and Independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi (465).
In Simpang Jeram, Pakatan-Amanah’s Nazri Abdul Rahman received 13,844 votes compared to Perikatan-PAS’ Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya (10,330) and Independent candidate S. Jeganathan (311).
